Prompting Verbs for Expository Writing from P. Ball

Students should understand what the following verbs ask them to do.

align      analyze     associate      calculate      categorize      clarity      classify       compare      compartmentalize      conclude     construct       contrast      create       decipher      deduce      define      deliberate      delineate      describe      design       designate       devise       differentiate       distinguish      elaborate      evaluate      evidence      excise       explain      explore      expose      extract      extrapolate       footnote       generalize       graph      hypothesize       identify      illustrate       incorporate       induct       interpret      investigate      judge       justify      list      order      organize      parpahrase      pontificate      postulate       predict       present       prioritize      profile      propose     rank      reflect     select      separate      sort      specify      strategize     summarize      synthesize       theorize      trace

Teacher may want to just note how many of the above they use in their questions requiring a constructed response.  Perhaps the words can be assigned to a grade level to scaffold the student’s understanding and depth of thinking.  These are the types of words often found in the standardized test questions.  Do our students understand the words and the implications on the answers they write?    Food for thought!
