Stephanie’s handout2 – monitoring comprehension
Monitoring comprehension
Readers need explicit instruction to:
· Become aware of their thinking as they read
· Listen to their inner voice and notice when they veer away from an inner conversation with the text
· Detect obstacles and confusions that derail understanding
· Understanding how strategies can help repair meaning when it breaks down.
We explicitly teach readers to:
· Track their thinking through coding the text, writing or discussion
· Think critically about the text and develop the disposition to question the author and the information or logic in the text.
· Recognize that all of their questions have value. There is no such thing as a stupid question.
· Identify and articulate what’s confusing or puzzling about the text.
· Notice when they loose focus and consciously stop and redirect thinking.
· Stop and go back to clarify thinking
· Reread or read on to enhance understanding and clarify meaning.
· Stop and take stock of meaning throughout the reading and match the problem with the strategy that will best solve it.
